We’re Only In It for the Honey, Gimme More (Independent)

The first time I saw We’re Only In It for the Honey a few years ago at the now-defunct Zeppelin’s, I couldn’t figure out whether they reminded me more of the Stooges or Guns N’ Roses. After listening to Gimme More, the New Orleans quartet’s first full-length record, the G N’ R comparison prevails. And the blistering, loud production of White Zombie’s J. Yuenger, who helmed Rock City Morgue’s last release, certainly doesn’t hurt. Where the band’s self-produced demo sounded like a garage-punk demo, Gimme More sounds like the soundtrack to a midnight drive down the Sunset Strip circa 1986. The guitars have a high-octane, cranked-to-10 punch, and lead vocalist Joe Dean wails with a reckless swagger, spewing the kind of lyrics that would have gotten a rise out of Tipper Gore. Even on the slower, acoustic-tinged tracks, the band retains that hard-rock attitude, thanks in no small part to their channeling of the Doors. With Gimme More, We’re Only In It for the Honey has unleashed the sleaziest, cockiest rock New Orleans has seen since Supagroup. Lord knows we need it.
