Slim Harpo Music Awards In Baton Rouge, May 1

Those with a hunger for deep blues and Louisiana roots music will want to be in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 1, when the annual Slim Harpo Music Awards will be presented at the Manship Theater.

Named for the Louisiana blues great, this year’s awards will salute a number of figures from Harpo’s own career. The “Legends” award signifies “one who has credits of historical blues music status” and this year’s recipients are: Warren Storm (swamp-pop pioneer and lately a Li’l Band O’Gold member) and two musicians who played in Harpo’s band: The late Excello recording artist Guitar Gable, and drummer Jockey Etienne (more recently a member of the Creole Zydeco Farmers).

The Ambassador Award will be given to David Kearns, who booked several of Harpo’s live appearances and recorded a 1961 performance that was releSlim Harpo Music Awards this weekased years later on a London label, turning out to be his only live album. The Pioneer Award will go to Baton Rouge native Harvey Knox—a blues performer for 50 years, and a former inmate at Angola. An end-of-night jam will feature Carol Fran (who received a Legends award last year), Deacon John Moore, Kenny Neal, Luther Kent and surprise special guests.
