Aaron Sorkin’s Critically Acclaimed Adaptation of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Takes Center Stage at Saenger Theatre

On May 30, the Saenger Theatre will host a limited, six-night showing of Aaron Sorkin‘s adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird

The play follows the classic book by Harper Lee, set in the racially divided town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the 1930s. The story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl who, along with her brother Jem, becomes aware of the racial prejudices and social injustices in their community. Their father, Atticus Finch, a compassionate and morally upright lawyer, defends a Black man named Tom Robinson, who is falsely accused of assaulting a White woman. Through the trial and its aftermath, the novel explores themes of prejudice and the loss of childhood innocence. The book has become a mainstay of curricula across the country, and nearly 60 years later, it remains a seminal piece on race relations.

Along with a movie adaptation, To Kill a Mockingbird has also been adapted into theater. Aaron Sorkin’s book adaptation opened on Broadway in 2018 and is now touring the country. It received critical acclaim from The New York Times which described it as “the most successful American play in Broadway history,” and Rolling Stone, which called it “an emotionally shattering landmark production of an American classic.”

The show will run six consecutive days from May 30 to June 4. Over the weekend, there are matinee showings as well. Saenger Theater is located at 1111 Canal St. Tickets are on sale now.
