Anton Haardt Gallery Hosts ‘Mic-less’ Open Mic

Anton Haardt Gallery will host a “Mic-less” Open Mic and Open House on Friday, May 15 from 6–8 p.m., offering local creatives an opportunity to share music, poetry, storytelling, acting and other performances in an informal gallery setting.

The Magazine Street gallery, known for its collection of outsider, folk and contemporary art, is inviting performers to sign up for five-minute sets while attendees explore the space and its rotating collection of eclectic works. The event will also include refreshments and an open-house atmosphere designed to encourage community connection and artistic experimentation.

The Anton Haardt Gallery is an oasis for folk and outsider art from around the world, much of which originates right here in the South. Mose Tolliver, Sybil Gibson, Howard Finster, and Jimmie Lee Sudduth are only a few of the Southern Outsider artists that the gallery has championed over the years. “Outsider Art” is the most popular term to describe these creations. Outsider artists, like blues musicians, create because the spirit moves them. They are mysterious enigmas and symbols of freedom. Their work, often painted on discarded grocery bags, galvanized roofing tin, is raw and the result of the pure impulse to create.

The Anton Haardt Gallery is located at 2858 Magazine Street.
