Art for Arts Sake returns to celebrate the cultural importance of Magazine Street

Art for Arts Sake returns October 6

Along the six-mile stretch of Magazine, shops, restaurants, galleries and more will bring tens of thousands of deal-hunters into their doors. According to the Magazine Street Merchants Association, Art for Arts Sake and other events they put on help “promote Magazine Street as one of New Orleans’ most vibrant and valued business and cultural districts.” The MSMA also produces May’s Magazine Street Champagne Stroll and December’s Merriment on Magazine.

Shops will extend their hours until 9 p.m. for the event, which is free and open to the public. Things kick off at 5 p.m. Visit the website at www.magazinestreet.com for a list of participating stores, shops, galleries, and restaurants.

During this year’s Art for Arts Sake, the CAC will present its Artist in Residency performance showcase titled “Southern Crossings,” featuring:

6:30pm – Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever by composer Leyla McCalla and director Kiyoko McCrae,  a multi-media piece in development inspired by Radio Haiti-Inter, Haiti’s privately owned radio station. The songs and compositions are juxtaposed with the archival video and audio recordings of Radio Haiti.

7:30pm – Vessels by Rebecca Mwase and Ron Ragin, a seven-women harmonic meditation that explores the transcendental possibilities of song during the Middle Passage.

8:30pm – Raw Fruit by Kesha McKey and the KM Dance Project, a dance presentation of stories that reveal the essence of ancestral values that are woven into the cultural fabric of our lives.

The Southern Crossings performances are free and open to the public and made possible through the support of the Mellon Foundation. RSVP is suggested at cacno.org.
