Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) Named Grand Griot of the New Orleans Maafa Commemoration

The Ashé Cultural Arts Center has announced the appointment of Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (F.K.A. Christian Scott) as the Grand Griot of the New Orleans Maafa CommemorationThe honor will take place at Ashé’s annual Maafa Commemoration on Saturday, July 1, at 7:00 a.m., beginning at Congo Square (701 N Rampart St.) This prestigious title recognizes Chief Adjuah’s exceptional contributions to the city’s music community and his role as a revered elder within his community.

The Grand Griot designation holds great significance in the West African tradition, symbolizing Chief Adjuah’s selection as the custodian of New Orleans’ stories and traditions. This momentous occasion will take place within Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s annual Maafa Commemoration, which is a racial healing commemoration of its ancestors, known and unknown, from the Transatlantic & Domestic Slave Trades. The ceremony of performances, heartfelt prayers, and healing words will be followed by a procession led by drummers from Congo Square to the Mississippi River. The ceremony will commence with Chief Adjuah’s acceptance speech and musical performance, followed by a procession led by drummers from Congo Square to the Mississippi River. Chief Adjuah has long been an integral part of New Orleans’ music community, embodying the essence of its cultural heritage. This event will further amplify his remarkable legacy and the profound influence of the Xodokan Nation of New Orleans on the city’s artistic landscape.

In addition to the appointment, Chief Xian ATunde Adjuah will release his highly anticipated album, Bark Out Thunder Roar Out Lightning, on July 28. This project will delve into the roots and history of rock ‘n roll and blues, exploring the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans, the Diaspora, and West Africa.
