New Orleans funk and R&B legend Cyril Neville has released Don’t Wait Til I’m Gone, his first solo album in several years.
Produced by trumpeter and vocalist Shamarr Allen, the album features a wide-ranging cast of New Orleans musicians, including members of the Hot 8 Brass Band, guitarist Leo Nocentelli, saxophonist Donald Harrison, keyboardist Ivan Neville and Kermit Ruffins. The title track is a collaboration between Cyril and his late brother Aaron Neville, who co-wrote the song with Michael Goods and contributes vocals.
Allen played a major role in shaping the record, co-writing many of the songs and arranging much of the horn work. One standout track, “Lemonade,” incorporates the second line energy of the Hot 8 Brass Band and was written during a rapid-fire songwriting session between Allen and Neville.
The project also highlights contributions from younger generations of New Orleans musicians. Cyril’s son Omari Neville and his band The Fuel provide backing vocals and instrumentation throughout the album. Allen’s 15-year-old son Donte appears on trumpet on “Our Love,” while Cyril’s grandson Ari, 19, composed the music for the song “You Hold Me Down.”
Other guests include Donald Harrison on the title track, Leo Nocentelli on “Poppa Wa Ditty,” and Kermit Ruffins, who joins Neville for a duet on “Positive Is How I Live.”
In announcing the album’s release, Neville described the project as a product of “mutual love and respect” and credited Allen with helping him embrace new creative approaches. The result, he said, is a “danceable, feel-good musical gumbo” rooted in the collaborative spirit of New Orleans music.
