Danny O’Flaherty celebrates 70th birthday with livestream concert of Irish music

From 1989 until its closure following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, O’Flaherty’s Irish Channel Pub on Toulouse Street served an unofficial embassy of the Emerald Isle in the French Quarter. Its namesake, Danny O’Flaherty, will offer a nostalgic return to the days when he presided over the stage as he celebrates his 70th birthday and 50 years as a professional musician with a Facebook Live concert on Friday, March 5, at 7 p.m. Central.

A native son of Connemara, County Galway, O’Flaherty is a singer and songwriter who immigrated to the U.S. in 1970. He has spent spent much of his life preserving and promoting Celtic culture.

“O’Flaherty’s [Pub] was my dream come true,” he wrote in a blog post on his personal website. “It was a place where we could teach Irish dance, speak our native Gaelic language and listen to and play Celtic folk music. We had a courtyard where we would have special outdoor concerts and weddings, and even held Mass there on occasion.”

O’Flaherty now lives in Jasper, Texas. The pay-what-you-can live performance will take place at Esplanade Studios with a suggestion of $20 through Venmo or PayPal. Visit his Facebook page for more information.
