Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week

Get ready for a week-long celebration of Louisiana’s rich musical heritage at the Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week, taking place from March 19 – 24, 2024. Hosted at the picturesque Lakeview Beach & RV campground, this event promises an immersive experience into the vibrant world of Cajun and Creole music.

Renowned as a band camp for adults, the Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week offers an array of activities for participants. Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a beginner, there’s something for everyone. Participants can choose between day rates or full-week registration options, gaining access to the All-Star trad music faculty, delicious eats, dance classes, nightly dance bands, Creole trail-rider workshops, and even crawfish races.

One of the highlights of the Dewey Balfa Cajun & Creole Heritage Week is the opportunity to learn directly from master musicians, cooks, and craftspeople in a nature-based setting. Participants can schedule one-to-one lessons, discuss the creative process with Louisiana folk craft artisans, and even learn some tricks for Louisiana cooking during sessions with regional chefs.

Lakeview Park & Beach, the venue for Balfa Camp 2024, is situated on the border of Evangeline and St. Landry parishes, both known for their rich Cajun and Creole culture. Attendees can choose from a variety of housing options, including private or shared lodging at Lakeview Park, RV parking, deluxe cabins, tents, or local B&Bs and hotels.

In addition to music workshops and jam sessions, participants can also enjoy cultural events in the region, including the 37th Annual World Championship Crawfish Etouffee Cookoff. Tuition rates range from full-time 5-day rates to daily rates, with discounts available for Friends of Folk Roots members.

For those with children ages 8 to 13, Kids Camps are available in June in Opelousas and Lafayette and will  be offering loans of accordions, fiddles, and guitars with advance registration.
