Dr. John’s last album, Things Happen That Way, to be released by Rounder Records

Dr. John’s Things Happen That Way album—recorded during the final months of his life—will be released by Rounder Records on September 23, 2022. Co-produced by guitarist Shane Theriot, the album includes several country covers. Two Hank Williams songs, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and “Ramblin’ Man,” and the Johnny Cash song “Guess Things Happen That Way” and Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away” both written by Jack Clement was also recorded. Rolling Stone Magazine quotes Karla R. Pratt, Dr. John’s daughter and the album’s executive producer: “He loved how simple yet emotionally complex Hank’s [Williams] songs are, and that they have a hook with a twist. For this album inspired by listening to the Louisiana Hayride and icons of country and western, he was excited to do songs in a way that evokes emotion that sticks with you long after one of the songs—done his soulful way—is played.”
