Event Review: Grayson Brockamp and the New Orleans Wildlife Band

Grayson Brockamp and The New Orleans Wildlife Band had a spectacular performance at Snug Harbor in September and will return to Frenchmen Street in December at the Marigny Brasserie.

The small venue made for a very cozy and personal atmosphere while the band opened its set with a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To the Moon,” in which the added keyboard and piano gave the song a very signature, modern New Orleans feel. After that came a cover of “Ain’t Misbehavin” wherein the dueling saxophone and trumpet really displayed the playful chemistry among band members. The improvised solos were in typical jazz fashion and gave the set a sense of whimsy. The band then went into some original pieces, including a track off the recently released EP, Got Your Back, Yes Indeed. The song has a funky, gospel sound that honestly made it hard to sit still during the very lively tune.

As the night went on, the set slowed down with a smooth, jazzy rendition of “My Funny Valentine” which Bailey Hinton performed flawlessly, and had everyone in the club swaying along. Things started to pick back up with an original song called “Day One” which was prefaced with a story from Grayson himself, about how he wrote the song about the first day of his being married. It was an upbeat instrumental piece that made you feel all of the excitement imbued in his new life with a new partner.

As things came to a close, the band played “Glory Glory Hallelujah” and surprised us with an encore of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” Between the funky gospel sounds and classic blues and jazz elements, it’s no wonder Grayson Brockamp and the New Orleans Wildlife Band will be soon having a permanent weekly spot at Marigny Brasserie.
