Festivals Acadiens et Créoles to Commemorate Clifton Chenier’s Legacy

Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, the annual Cajun and zydeco music festival, is preparing to pay tribute to the renowned King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier. The festival, a significant event celebrating the Cajun and Créole culture, is scheduled from October 13 to 15 at Girard Park in Lafayette.

Clifton Chenier, who performed at the inaugural festival in 1974, holds a special place in the history of Festivals Acadiens et Créoles. Clifton, often called the “King of Zydeco,” was a notable musician celebrated for his accordion skills and distinctive vocals, which introduced many new audiences to the rhythms of South Louisiana’s Creole and zydeco music. Born in 1925, Chenier’s upbringing in the Bayou region shaped his musical journey and also helped tocreate Chenier’s reputation as a “Louisiana Music Master.

Chenier’s influence extended beyond the local scene, gaining international recognition for his contributions. His album I’m Here earned a Grammy Award for Best Ethnic or Traditional Folk Recording in 1984. Chenier also received esteemed accolades, including the National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards.

This year’s event will feature performances by artists such as Roddie Romero and the Hub City All-stars, Corey Ledet and His Zydeco Band, who led a tribute to Clifton last year, and Grammy-nominated artist Sonny Landreth, who was once an apprentice to Chenier.

On Saturday, October 14, Scène la Louisiane will showcase a musical homage by C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band, reflecting the enduring influence of Clifton Chenier’s musical legacy.

Barry Ancelet, Festival Director, remarked on the significance of this year’s theme, stating, “Clifton Chenier’s contributions to Zydeco music and his role in promoting Creole culture are important parts of our heritage. By recognizing his influence, we honor his impact on our cultural identity.”

The entire music lineup for Festivals Acadiens et Créoles 2023 is set to be disclosed in August, adding to the anticipation of the upcoming event.
