Redefining the term “elder statesman,” trumpeter Lionel Ferbos turns 103 years old today. Ferbos was born on July 17, 1911.

His performing career lasted until after his 102 birthday, when he stopped playing his regular gig at the Palm Court Jazz Café on Decatur Street.
Ferbos began playing trumpet in 1926 at the age of 15, and he was playing lead trumpet in a band called the Louisiana Shakers by 21.
Ever open to encouraging new talent, generations of New Orleans jazz musicians have looked to Ferbos for inspiration.
Today he stands as inspiration to us all as he reflects on 103 years of living the life that he chose set to the music he helped shape.
