‘Help Us Save Us’ New Year’s parade addresses violence in NOLA

The Perfect Gentlemen and the Brasshoppers Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs will host a New Year’s day second line on Sunday, January 1. The second line theme is “Help Us Save Us,” aimed at addressing the deadly violence in New Orleans that continues to rank New Orleans as one of the most murderous cities in America. Music will be by Da Truth Brass Band.

Travis Lyons, a member of the Perfect Gentlemen Social Aid and Pleasure Club and one of the lead organizers said, “I travel all over the country and no matter where I go, New Orleans continues to make the national news for the murders and violence that occurs here. Each and every one of us has to have a personal stake in making a change in our city, from our city leaders on down. Reducing the murders and violent crime has to be our number one priority,” he said.

The second line will form at 11:45 a.m. at Tipitina’s, 501 Napoleon Ave and begin at noon.

The “Help Us Save Us” parade’s route will follow Napoleon Avenue to St. Charles Avenue turning right onto St. Charles Avenue. The parade will then turn left at Louisiana Avenue and proceed to Lasalle street where it will turn right and move to Washington Avenue where it will stop and pay tribute to the old Magnolia housing complex. The parade will make its final move down Washington Avenue to Claiborne Avenue where it will turn right, flow to Jackson Ave and disband at Kings Fashions on Claiborne Avenue.  Event organizers ask attendees to leave all weapons at home.
