Historic Luthjen’s Dance Hall inspires live recording series at Marigny Studios

A neighborhood beer parlor and dance hall that served the Faubourg Marigny area for much of the 20th century, Luthjen’s Dance Hall, is now the home of Marigny Recording Studios. Later this month, it will be the location of the “intimate evening at Luthjen’s” event, hosted by Marigny Studios, Grande Krewe Fine Wine & Spirits and Julian Mutter. The event, comprised of monthly recording sessions featuring contemporary New Orleans jazz artists performing for a live audience, will begin on September 13 and will take place every second Friday of each month until March.

“I am very excited to have live jazz performances returning to Luthjen’s Dance Hall,” said Julian Mutter, local entrepreneur. “We are working with extraordinary local musicians to ensure that everyone who attends the performance will have a memorable experience and a CD!”

Opened by Clementine Luthjen at the corner of Franklin and Marais, Luthjen’s hosted a number of talented jazz musicians over the years, including Deedee & Billie Pierce, George Lewis and “Big Eye” Louis Nelson. Unfortunately, in the 1960s, a fire destroyed the dance hall, but Clementine’s nephew, Jerome Luthjen, re-opened the business at the corner of Marigny and Chartres. Although the business closed in 1981, Marigny Studios repurposed the building in 2011 and turned the dance hall into a multi room recording studio.

Admission to the event grants access to wine, small bites and music. The series begins on Sept. 13 with a performance from local jazz singer John Boutté, who recently released his album, A ‘Well Tempered’ Boutté. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m. Each audience member will receive a recording of the night’s performance. Marigny Studios is located at 2300 Chartres St.
