Jon Batiste scores Oscar nomination for his work on ‘Soul’

Jon Batiste is getting all the nominations this awards season and you can add Oscar nod to his list of accolades. Today, the Academy announced that Batiste is being recognized for his work with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for their contributions to Disney Pixar’s Soul, starring Jamie Foxx.  Batiste, the pianist, recording artist and bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert—wrote the movie’s original jazz compositions and arrangements. He’s also the model for Soul principal character Joe Gardner’s piano performances in the film.

As reported by John Wirt, “When you see Joe’s hands playing in the film, that’s Jon’s playing,” Soul producer Dana Murray says in the film’s production notes. “Our animators studied reference footage of Jon at the piano to capture details of how he plays—everything from how his fingers move to the breaths he takes.”

Batiste talked to CBS This Morning about the atmosphere at the socially-distance award and said he actually appreciated the silence and setting.

Jon Batiste, Oscar nominee told the show, “Pete Docter and the team at Pixar really created this environment where we told stories to each other for the first few months. And then, over time you see parts of the film where there’s pieces of my story, pieces of dialogue, music all kind of intertwining. So I really put a lot of myself into this film. Very moving to see the reception around the world, very moving for all of us.”
