Louisiana Acts Win Big at Grammys, Land ACM Nominations, Blues Hall of Fame

Big congrats are due Louisiana artists who took home top honors at the 55th annual Grammy Awards over the weekend. As expected, New Orleans native (and 2013 Jazz Fest headliner) Frank Ocean cleaned up, with trophies in the Best Urban Contemporary Album (for Channel ORANGE) and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration categories (for “No Church in the West,” with Jay-Z and Kanye West).

Also not so surprisingly, Dr. John scored a Grammy – his career fifth – for Best Blues Album Locked Down, while the record’s producer Dan Auerbach won Producer of the Year.

Cajun supergroup The Band Courtbouillon landed Best Regional Roots Music Album.

Alas, country music darling Hunter Hayes didn’t win in any of his three categories (Best New Artist among them), but he now has the Academy of Country Music Awards on the horizon. The 21-year-old Breaux Bridge native was nominated for New Male Vocalist of the Year, Single Record/Album of the Year (Award to Artist(s)/Producer(s)/Record Company) and Song of the Year (given to Composer(s)/Publisher(s)/Artist(s)) for Wanted and its title track and Video of the Year for the accompanying clip.

Hayes did appear during Sunday’s Grammy telecast in Los Angeles, where he introduced his touring partner Carrie Underwood. Also, Dr. John and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined the Auerbach’s band the Black Keys onstage to perform “Lonely Boy,” a Grammy winner itself for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song (good luck finding footage online).

The 48th annual ACM Awards will be handed out April 7 in Las Vegas and will be broadcast live on CBS.

Last but most certainly not least comes word that legendary studio engineer and owner Cosimo Matassa will be inducted into the Blues Foundation‘s Hall of Fame this May in Memphis. Matassa was the first recipient of OffBeat’s Best of The Beat Lifetime Achievement Award for Music Business.

Again, kudos to all.
