Louisiana Singer-Songwriter David Egan Dies

Singer-songwriter David Egan passed away on Friday, March 18 following a second battle with lung cancer. The Lafayette-based piano player was 61 years old, and would have turned 62 on Sunday.

Egan developed a deep catalog over the course of his nearly four-decade career, penning songs for an array of musicians like Irma Thomas, Etta James, Percy Sledge, Solomon Burke, Joe Cocker, Mavis Staples and Tab Benoit, among others.

He also gained notoriety as a musician in his own right, first with Shreveport-based outfit A-Train and then with Cajun music ensemble Filé and swamp-rock supergroup Lil’ Band O’ Gold. Egan also recorded three solo albums, 2003’s Twenty Years of Trouble (which picked up a Best of the Beat Award for Best Country/Rock Album), 2008’s You Don’t Know Your Mind and a 2013 self-titled release.

A memorial for Egan will be held at a later date, and a full obituary will appear in the April issue of OffBeat.
