Loyola’s Jim McCormick Pens Hit and Nabs Lifetime Achievement Award

Jim McCormick, instructor of “Craft and the Business of Songwriting” at Loyola New Orleans, is full of good news lately.

The multi-Grammy nominated songwriter who has penned songs for the likes of Harry Connick, Jr., Kelly Clarkson, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, and more. This month, his song “The Good Ones,” recorded by Gabby Barrett, exploded on Billboard’s Country Top 40 chart and has been dubbed “The Wedding Song of 2020.” This isn’t McCormick’s first time charting with Billboard. In 2012 he wrote two No. 1 Billboard country chart songs for Jason Aldean and Brantley Gilbert.

Currently signed to a publishing deal with Eclipse Music Group, McCormick, a lifelong New Orleanian, has served as board governor and vice-president for the Recording Academy and on the Nashville Songwriters Association International board.

Additionally, the 28th Cutting Edge CE Conferences and Events has announced McCormick as the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. He will also be the Cutting Edge REDUX’s Keynote speaker, where he will sit down (virtually) with OffBeat’s own Jan Ramsey on Friday, October 16, 2:00 PM (CST).

McCormick is a graduate of Georgetown with a degree in English. He returned to New Orleans after graduation and spent eight years on the road with his band, the Bingemen, which ended their run in 1999. In the past, he taught at UNO and worked at a music trade publication.
