New Orleans Artists to Celebrate The Band’s Last Waltz with 40th Anniversary Tribute

A few of New Orleans’ finest musicians will join forces at the Joy Theater on Friday, November 25 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Band’s famed farewell concert, The Last Waltz.

last waltz nolaDave Malone, Reggie Scanlan, the New Orleans Suspects, Honey Island Swamp Band, Bonerama Horns, Papa Mali, John “Papa” Gros, Johnny Sansone, John Mooney, Terence Higgins, Ron Johnson, CR Gruver, Jake Eckert and Johnny Sketch can all be found on the show’s initial lineup, though more artists will be added in the coming weeks.

Louisiana was well represented at the actual Last Waltz, which took place at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on November 25, 1976. Dr. John and Bobby Charles dropped by for renditions of “Such a Night” and “Down South in New Orleans” (unfortunately, Charles’ contribution was cut from Martin Scorsese’s beloved concert film). On top of that, the late Allen Toussaint wrote new horn arrangements that took many of The Band’s classic tunes to a new level.

The upcoming show will mark the latest tribute to The Last Waltz to take place in town. In fact, it will mark the second such tribute to be billed as The Last Waltz New Orleans, seeing as guitarist Warren Haynes helmed a similar concert at the Saenger Theatre during Jazz Fest (that one featured Malone and Higgins, plus George Porter Jr., Don Was, John Medeski and many more.

Tickets for the Joy Theater’s Last Waltz tribute are currently on sale.
