New Orleans Native Takes Home World Oyster Eating Title

New Orleans’ own Adrian “The Rabbit” Morgan defeated 10-time winner Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas to take home the title of World Oyster Eating Champion on Saturday afternoon. Morgan and Thomas both consumed 42 dozen (or 504!) oysters over the course of eight minutes during the competition, which ended with a tie-breaking heat that saw Morgan down two dozen oysters more quickly than his rival.

Thomas, who hails from Alexandria, VA, has held the title since 2005. A veritable legend in competitive-eating circles, she managed to beat Morgan on a few previous occasions, though the New Orleans native upset her during the 2014 Crawfish Eating World Championship. Saturday’s competition was essentially a battle between the two, with Michelle “Cardboard Shell” Lesco of Tuscon, AZ taking the third place slot after consuming 32 dozen oysters.

The Acme Oyster House World Oyster Eating Championship took place at the seventh annual New Orleans Oyster Festival. The fest brought plenty of live music and vendors from over 20 restaurants to Woldenberg Park over the weekend. It also featured the annual P&J Oyster Shucking Competition, an event that was won by Jay Gallette of New Orleans’ Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar.
