Office Of Cultural Economy Announces $150K In Funding For Social Aid And Pleasure Clubs

Mayor LaToya Cantrell, in collaboration with Sen. James “Jimmy” Harris III and Lisa Alexis, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy (OCE), proudly announced the allocation of $150,000 to support the New Orleans Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs for the upcoming 2024 Second Line Parade Season. The OCE will act as the sponsoring organization, overseeing the disbursement of funds in accordance with the executed Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) between the City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Department of Treasury.

The comprehensive agreement outlines the utilization of one-time state funding to bolster various projects contributing to economic development, youth and families, cultural economy, mental health, and criminal justice coordination in New Orleans. Mayor Cantrell expressed her enthusiasm for reinvesting in the vibrant culture of the city, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to supporting those who contribute to and preserve its rich heritage.

The funds, redirected from marketing efforts, are now fueling the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund, providing a substantial boost to the growth and sustainability of cultural endeavors in the city. Sen. Harris III, through the CEA, has allocated $150,000 to ensure public safety police escorts via the Office of Police Secondary Employment (OPSE) and cover the costs of all necessary permits and licenses submitted to the Department of Safety & Permits.

This initiative reflects a crucial investment in the local arts and culture ecosystem, maintaining the essence of New Orleans’ traditional heritage. Lisa Alexis expressed gratitude for the significant cultural contributions made by the social aid and pleasure clubs, underscoring the privilege felt in reciprocating that contribution through this substantial investment.

The mission of the OCE is to stimulate economic activity and growth in local cultural sectors by creating opportunities for arts and creative producers to thrive. This involves leading initiatives, curating events, forging partnerships, and connecting with the community across all facets of the cultural economy. The announcement marks a pivotal step in sustaining and strengthening the vibrant cultural tapestry of New Orleans.
