Papa Grows Funk will reunite at Tipitina's on May 6, 2019.

Papa Grows Funk to reunite for “One More Monday” celebration

John “Papa” Gros, guitarist June Yamagishi, bassist Marc Pero, saxophonist Jason Mingledorff and drummer Jeffery “Jellybean” Alexander will reunite to salute Papa Grows Funk’s dearly missed music.

On May 6, the day after Jazz Fest’s closing set, Tipitina’s will host the Papa Grows Funk: One More Monday reunion show. It’s a historic event, considering the band’s 2018 show was the first time the guys played together in five years. After disbanding in 2013, the group left behind tons of disheartened fans. At the time of announcing the indefinite hiatus, Gros said “After much discussion, we have decided to take an indefinite break to pursue other musical interests.”

Longtime fans may remember that the band’s signature gig took place Mondays at the Maple Leaf, hence the genesis of “one more Monday.” In 2013 as John Swenson reported, a final goodbye took place, also on the Monday post-Jazz Fest., for what he described as “a wild party that went on through the night.”

As of now, there has yet to be an announcement of any supporting act for Papa Grows Funk’s May 6, 2019 reunion show. Doors open at 8:00 p.m and music starts at 9:00 p.m.. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 day of show. They’ll go on sale Friday, December 14 at 11 a.m. CST at Tipitinas.com.
