Jazz Fest Lover Pat Green To Celebrate 94th Birthday With Jazz Funeral

“I moved here for the jazz,” a 93-year-old Charleston transplant and OffBeat subscriber Pat Green told The Advocate’s Keith Spera at this year’s Jazz Fest.

On Saturday, October 7, Green’s New Orleans Jazz Funeral and Second Line Parade will make its way through the French Quarter, but with one unusual inclusion: Pat will be in attendance, in living color. Though there has not been an announcement made to suggest any failing health, her family says she simply wants to be around to enjoy it, and the October 7 marks her birthday weekend (she will be 94 on October 9).

Though not a local, Green has become a local staple thanks to her annual exoduses to Jazz Fest, dating back 25 years. According her son, Bruce Green, she started her own tradition, bringing a new jersey to the festival and having it signed by all the musicians she heard play. Eventually, she wants to donate them all to the Charleston Jazz Museum, a city which bestowed her with the #1 Jazz Fan Award, given by the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

Saturday’s celebration of life will be the first time a jazz funeral and second line parade will take place with the honoree sitting atop a horse-drawn cart and jazzy coffin, waving to the crowds. Leroy Jones and his Original Hurricane Brass Band will lead the affair, joined by a Grand Marshall. Reverand Tony of French Quarter Wedding Chapel will be in tow, as well.

The parade will begin (3:30p.m.) and end at Spanish Plaza. Those unable to make it can join the after-party at Little Gem Saloon (445 S. Rampart St.). For all route and parade questions, please called Reverend Tony at (504) 915-1604.

Happy birthday, Pat! Meet Pat here.
