Paul Sanchez to Present Johnny Cash Tribute at Chickie Wah Wah

Local musician, songwriter, producer and former OffBeat Magazine cover artist, Paul Sanchez, who has received numerous songwriting and performance accolades by receiving multiple Best of The Beat Awards, is gearing up to deliver an authentic tribute to Johnny Cash. The concert will take place on June 24 at 8 p.m. at Chickie Wah Wah, the Canal Street music venue in the city (entrance is for 21+).

Paul Sanchez has significantly impacted the music scene, having been involved in various creative endeavors. His portrayal of himself in the HBO series Treme and his work on the musical adaptation of Dan Baum’s New Orleans-centric book Nine Lives, along with writer Colman deKay, garnered major attention. Nine Lives recounts the stories of nine New Orleans residents from the year Hurricane Betsy struck in 1965 to the devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and beyond.

The loss of his home and possessions compelled him to seek a new path, ultimately leading him to embark on a solo career.

Sanchez’s musical journey began in the French Quarter, where he started writing songs and performing professionally before the age 16. He played a prominent role in the New Orleans rock scene in the 1980s alongside Vance DeGeneres in The Backbeats and as one of the founding members of the rock band Cowboy Mouth.

Acknowledged for his songwriting skills, Sanchez has earned accolades, including being named Songwriter of the Year by OffBeat Magazine in 2014 and receiving multiple Best of The Beat Awards over the years. His compositions have been recorded by respected artists such as Darius Rucker and Irma Thomas.

The Johnny Cash tribute by Paul Sanchez seeks to honor the iconic “Man in Black” legacy with his unique blend of music and storytelling.
