Raney Antoine Jr.: Nurturing Talent While Crafting His Own Unique Sound in New Orleans

Raney Antoine, Jr., the Westbank native and a 2014 graduate of Loyola University, is making waves in the music industry as both an artist and educator. With a unique blend of talents and a solid commitment to his roots, Antoine Jr.’s story is a testament to the power of music as a force for connection, expression, and empowerment.

Antoine Jr.’s musical journey is as diverse as his skills, with a background in drums, piano, songwriting and producing. His musical palette has led him to collaborate with various talents, including upcoming artists like Dominic Scott, Benji of Spillage Village (known for his affiliation with rapper J. Cole’s Dreamville collective and label) and songwriter Ricki Rich.

One of Antoine Jr.’s standout achievements came in 2020 when he helped compose a soundscape for “Society’s Cage,” an architectural installation on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The installation shed light on the racial oppression ingrained in our society, making a powerful statement through art and activism.

Antoine Jr.’s journey into education began shortly after he graduated from Loyola when he returned to his high school to pioneer the first music technology program in Jefferson Parish. His teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in leaving a positive impact and nurturing talent. “The biggest goal as an educator is to demystify the craft of music so that it can be used as a tool of connection and expression,” Antoine Jr. remarks.

While he continues to inspire budding musicians, Antoine Jr. is also forging his path as an artist. He is working on an album, with the first single slated to be released next year. This project will aim to showcase the abundant local talent in New Orleans, a city that has played a pivotal role in shaping his identity as a musician and educator.

“Art is supposed to uplift the culture,” Antoine Jr. asserts. He says his storytelling is meant to resonate with both those who have experienced these values and those who aspire to embrace them.

What sets Antoine Jr. apart is his commitment to his hometown. Despite opportunities that might lure him to cities like Los Angeles or New York City, Antoine Jr. wants to stay and build upon the extensive talent pool in New Orleans. He was integral in bringing Lovell “U-P” Cooper to Loyola and creating the world’s first bachelor’s program in Hip-Hop and R&B.

Raney Antoine Jr.’s journey is a testament to the enduring power of music to bridge gaps, inspire change, and nurture the next generation of artists. His dedication to creating and educating makes him a unique figure in the music industry, and his commitment to his roots ensures that New Orleans remains a vibrant hub for musical innovation and education.
