New Orleans Rap Royalty Co-Host “Day Out Against Crime”

When you think of music to share with your kids, Master P and Mystikal may not be the very first artists to come to mind. But both rap superstars are performing together in New Orleans on Wednesday, July 3. And it’s not just any show: Their reunion at Behrman Stadium will be the finale of “Day Out Against Crime,” a fundraiser designed to enrich communities and lessen violence—and yes, even the hardcore rappers’ is intended to be family entertainment.

Master P seersucker

No Limit Records pioneer, Master P co-hosts New Orleans "Day Out Against Crime"

The show is the brainchild of Algiers native “Money Mike” Willis, the rap and gospel producer who founded the HOPE (Helping Other People Endure) project, through Master P’s California-based Let the Kids Grow foundation. Willis formed the organization in 2006 after his own son was charged with a high-profile murder. “We want to give the kids something to live for,” he told OffBeat this week. “We know one reason that crime is happening, it’s because they have nothing for the kids to do. You have kids trying to be grown, you have parents working overtime so they’re raising themselves. Some of the playgrounds are no longer good playgrounds. So we’re going to try to help these kids. We want them to be able to participate in sports, if their parents can’t afford it. If they want to make records or videos, we want to get them into the studio and show them how to work the ProTools.”

Mystikal

Famed New Orleans rapper, Mystikal reunites with former labelmate for "Day Out Against Crime" concert.

The Day Out event begins at 2pm at the stadium, with kid-friendly events including live DJs and a meet-and-greet with Master P and his two children Romeo and Symphonique. The concert starts at 7 p.m., bringing Master P and Mystikal together for the first time in many years. And yes, Willis says you can bring your kids to that too. “I can’t promise they’ll tone down the verbiage of the show. We’ll be sending a message no matter what, and we’ll try to keep it as clean as possible, but you also have to give the people what they want. If people are concerned about what their kids may be hearing, they should come and see how they react. Don’t let someone give you a report; come and see it for yourself.”
