Rebirth Brass Band to Celebrate 33rd Anniversary

New Orleans’ famed Rebirth Brass Band will celebrate its 33rd anniversary with a concert at the Howlin’ Wolf on Friday, May 20. The Grammy Award-winning ensemble will be supported by Chapter:SOUL, a four-piece funk and soul outfit featuring Calvin Johnson Jr. and Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s Kirk Joseph. The event will take place one week before the band heads to South Korea for the Seoul Jazz Festival.

Rebirth has long been a staple of the New Orleans music scene, having formed in the city in 1983. The group’s debut album, Here to Stay!, was put out by Arhoolie Records in 1984. The label has since been acquired by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings on account of the cultural importance of its catalog.

While that first album’s title ended up being an accurate prediction, it was the band’s 2011 release Rebirth of New Orleans that earned them a well-deserved Grammy for Best Regional Roots Music Album. Their most recent LP–Move Your Body–was released in 2014.

Tickets for Rebirth’s 33rd anniversary show are on sale via the Howlin’ Wolf’s website.
