Record Store Day’s Louisiana Offerings

Thousands of vinyl fanatics the world over will celebrate Record Store Day when the event takes over music shops across the globe tomorrow, April 16. At least 16 stores in Louisiana will take part in the extravaganza, which has grown in popularity over the last few years as vinyl has made a resurgence among younger music lovers. Check out participating retailers here.

Hundreds of exclusive LPs, EPs, singles and more will be available as part of Record Store Day 2016, but we’ve decided to highlight the few offerings with Louisiana connections. Here’s a look at what’s out there:

Allen_PhillyALLEN TOUSSAINT – Live in Philadelphia (1975)

Originally released as a part of Rhino’s 2003 compilation, Allen Toussaint: The Complete Warner Recordings, this live album finds the late New Orleans legend putting his own spin on tracks that he primarily penned for other artists. Recorded during a 1975 concert in Phialdelphia, the 180-gram LP includes classics like “Southern Nights” and “Brickyard Blues,” as well as a few bonus tracks and liner notes by singer/songwriter Billy Vera. It’s Allen Toussaint at the top of his game.

Guy_WellsBUDDY GUY & JUNIOR WELLS – The Criteria Sessions

This LP from Louisiana blues guitar master Buddy Guy and late blues vocalist/harmonica player Junior Wells features B-sides from the pair’s 1972 album, Play The Blues. Originally released as a bonus disc on Rhino Handmade’s 2015 reissue of the album, this Record Store Day vinyl includes an alternative version of title track “Why Am I Treated So Bad? (Playin’ The Blues),” as well as renditions of blues standards like “Love Her with a Feeling.” The recordings were laid down under the tutelage of co-producers Eric Clapton, Tom Dowd and Ahmet Ertegun just a few months after Guy and Wells wrapped up a tour with the Rolling Stones.

LIL WAYNE – Tha Carter and The Carter II

Rap supertsar and New Orleans native Lil Wayne is offering double-LP editions of the first two releases in his Carter series. Originally released via Cash Money Records in 2004 and 2005, respectively, the albums feature some of Weezy’s most memorable tracks, like “Go D.J.,””Fireman,” “I Miss My Dawgs,” “Earthquake” and “Shooter.”

Lake Charles, LA-born country maverick Lucinda Williams is offering this 12″ vinyl, which features three alternate mixes of tracks from her 2016 album The Ghosts of Highway and her 2014 release Down Where The Spirit Meet the Bone. Among those are two remixes of Ghosts’ closing piece “Fath and Grace,” including an 18-minute version that showcases the song as it was originally intended.
