Shorty Fest 2022 will include outdoor block party

The Trombone Shorty Foundation, in partnership with the Tipit Foundation and Gia Maione Prima Foundation, announced that Shorty Fest 2022 Presented by Acura will take place on Monday, May 2, at Tipitina’s.

Headlined by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, this year’s musical lineup features performances by Galactic featuring Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, Dumpstaphunk, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and students from the Trombone Shorty Academy. Tickets sales benefit the Trombone Shorty Foundation, whose mission is committed to helping empower and educate future generations of musicians.

“We are so excited to bring Shorty Fest back to Tipitina’s this Jazz Fest,” said Robert Mercurio from Galactic and Tipitina’s. “It is such a special evening for us as band to share the stage with our friends and support a fantastic cause.”

In addition to the coveted indoor celebration, Shorty Fest is expanding its festivities with a free outdoor block party featuring performances by local brass bands, high school marching bands and Mardi Gras Indians. Shorty Fest will also feature a silent auction on the neutral ground with food trucks.

Starting at 5 p.m. in the neutral ground across from Tipitina’s, the block party will feature performances by the New Orleans Nightcrawlers, Trombone Shorty Academy students, and a battle of the bands featuring Warren Easton and Abramson Sci Academy marching bands. A silent auction will be held a tent.

Tipitina’s will host the return of its Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony during the outdoor block party—this year honoring the legendary musician Cyril Neville (The Neville Brothers, The Meters, Uptown All-Stars). The honor is given to musicians who have earned their place in New Orleans’ revered music history. Recipients are recognized as cultural icons in New Orleans who have provided countless inspiration to rising young musicians and performers.

Past Walk of Fame awardees have included Fats Domino, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers and Galactic.

“This year’s Shorty Fest is going to be epic,” said Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. “For the first time, we’re taking it to the street with a free block party to kick off the event as we celebrate the culture of greatest city in the world, New Orleans!”
