South Out of the Stomp

A reader noticed that soul singer Joe South’s name is missing from the list of artists performing at the Ponderosa Stomp September 24-25 at the House of Blues. South was one of the marquee artists announced earlier this year, along with the Trashmen, Thee Midniters, Red Simpson, Sugar Pie DeSanto and Duane Eddy. According to organizers, South has been ill recently and wasn’t confident that he’d be well enough to perform in September. He has been replaced on the lineup by LaLa Brooks, lead singer for the girl group the Crystals. Tickets for the Stomp go on sale Saturday.

In related news, the Ponderosa Stomp comes to the Motor City July 31 for the Detroit Breakdown at the Hearst Plaza Stage during the day and Damrosch Park Bandshell at night. Performers that day include Mitch Ryder, ? and the Mysterians, the Gories, Death, Eddie Kirkland, Melvin Davis, Spyder Turner, the Velvettes, Dennis Coffey and the Party Stompers. Artist bios and the schedule are online now, and both events are free.
