Trombone Shorty and Galactic will travel to Havana, Cuba to educate young musicians

Trombone Shorty and Galactic will take an “expedition” to Havana, Cuba in January, bringing along young New Orleans musicians as part of an educational partnership with Cuba Educational Travel. Hosted by Cuban funk band Cimafunk, the New Orleans travelers will join Cuban music students and local artists to create a musical experience capturing the long-standing cultural ties between the cities while supporting young people as well as the Cuban people.

The “Havana Funk Expedition”  will be a five-day, four-night trip from January 12-16, 2023 and will feature jam sessions, master classes, spontaneous musical experiences and additional surprise guests from Cuba including emerging acts and established artists. With the goal of supporting young musicians in Cuba and New Orleans, the Trombone Shorty Foundation in partnership with Cuba Educational Travel will also visit schools and community projects to help the people there.

“We want to see the next generation of New Orleans musicians ready for the world,” said Bill Taylor of The Trombone Shorty Foundation, “This ‘expedition’ allows these students the opportunity to experience another culture so closely tied to their own, historically and musically, which in turn gives them a better understanding of why New Orleans music is so special—the roots run deep. Once a young New Orleans musician taps into that cultural heritage and understands that it’s their responsibility to play it forward, the future of our music remains strong.”
