Video Premiere: The Deslondes “Out On The Rise”

Local off-kilter country-rockers The Deslondes are gearing up for a lengthy fall tour through much of the United States. In anticipation of the outing, the group–who take their name from the street in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward–have unveiled a brand new music video for “Out On The Rise,” the final track on their self-titled album.

The new video was shot by Joshua Shoemaker, who also directed the video for The Deslondes track “The Real Deal,” during an intimate performance in New Orleans’ Holy Cross neighborhood.

In his September review for OffBeat, Frank Etheridge described The Deslondes as “simply put, the stuff of greatness.” He also noted that the album, which was released earlier this year, “is awash in sin and loneliness set to mournful piano and horns, and achieves the uncontrived purity and raw emotion that New Orleans, and now the outside world, loves about this band.”

“I wrote ‘Out On The Rise’ when I was teaching myself some piano,” explains singer/guitarist Sam Doores. “I didn’t have a place or piano of my own at the time, but there were a few late night bars and even a grocery store in New Orleans that would let me come in around closing time and practice awhile. I came up with the tune during one of those late night sessions and figured I might as well write my own closing time song. Tom Waits and Randy Newman are long time heroes of mine so I figured I’d try to write a song I could imagine one of them singing.”

Doores continues, “The chorus touches on the frustration I was feeling of not being settled down anywhere or even being able to make up my mind to settle down anywhere. My best friends were scattered all over the country. It was a hot humid summer night in New Orleans. The mosquitos were back on the scene and I wanted to skip town again. Another part of me, however, was secretly hoping someone would cozy up next to me and try to convince me to stick around awhile.”

The Deslondes will kick off their tour when they support The Devil Makes Three in Buffalo, NY on October 20. They will hit the road for the next two months before bringing it back home to New Orleans for a December 12 show at Tipitina’s, where they will open for Pokey Lafarge.
