Video: Serena Williams’ Twerk Tutorial

Historians generally agree that “twerking” originated in New Orleans, where it was (and remains) an integral part of the culture surrounding bounce music. Yet the dance has come a long way since DJ Jubilee’s first recorded use of the term in 1993. Artists like Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Diplo and New Orleans’ own Big Freedia have incorporated (and in some of these cases, appropriated) twerking into their live shows and music videos in recent years, introducing the dance to millions of people around the world.

However, this distinctly New Orleans style of booty-shaking isn’t confined to the realm of music anymore. If tennis superstar Serena Williams’ new video is any indication, Olympic athletes are getting in on the fun too. The seven-time Wimbledon champion, who is about to compete for her 5th and 6th gold medals at the upcoming Rio Olympics, recorded a twerk tutorial for SELF Magazine yesterday. Check it out below.
