World Naked Bike Ride rolls through New Orleans this Saturday

The World Naked Bike Ride will take to the streets of downtown New Orleans this Saturday, June 10.

This weekend’s ride will mark the ninth New Orleans edition of the socially conscious and body positive event, which has taken place all over the the world since 2004. Affiliated bike rides will go down throughout June in over 70 cities across 20 countries.

While it may sound like fun and games, the event has a serious purpose: raising awareness about renewable energy, as well as the dangers faced by cyclists on a daily basis. Having hundreds of people ride naked through the streets is an interesting method of protest, but no one can deny that it’s an effective way to grab people’s attention.

This year’s New Orleans ride will kick off at 5pm at Mickey Mark Playground in the Bywater (riders are asked to gather at 4pm). Participating cyclists will then swing through the Marigny and French Quarter before returning to their starting point. Unlike previous years, Saturday’s route will not bring riders down Bourbon Street, though it does cross the road twice. All human powered vehicles will be welcome on the ride, including skates and skateboards.

“There have been complaints about riding up Bourbon Street which is part of our route,” event organizer Sebren Strother posted in a Facebook group dedicated to the ride in March. “The fact that women are being harassed by people as they ride naked is a big concern. So in keeping with a safe and fun time we will be changing the route to exclude Bourdon Street.”

The World Naked Bike Ride will be followed by an official after party at Castillo Blanco, a St. Claude Avenue establishment that serves as the headquarters for the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus. The celebration is set to begin at 7pm and will feature music, a bar and more. Clothing, unsurprisingly, is optional.
