WTUL Back to Full Power in Time for 54th Annual Marathon

WTUL 91.5FM, Tulane University’s student-run radio station renowned for its focus on underexposed and progressive music, has marked a significant milestone with the activation of its new antenna. This development follows over a year of broadcasting at reduced strength due to antenna issues. The new antenna, situated atop the Tulane Tidewater building on Canal St., has restored WTUL’s broadcasting power to its full 1500 watt capacity, allowing the station to reach new areas such as the Westbank, Marigny, Bywater, Irish Bayou, and beyond.

The decision to install the new antenna came after an emergency removal of the previous antenna in 2022, which forced WTUL to broadcast at only 500 watts and limited their coverage. Despite challenges such as rusting of the old antenna’s base and setbacks in the relocation process, including a fire in the Tidewater building, WTUL has successfully completed the transition to its new broadcasting setup.

Community volunteer DJ Laura Brunies expressed her excitement about the improved signal, highlighting how listeners can now enjoy WTUL without the hassle of indoor antenna adjustments or web streaming. General Manager Lanie McLeod conveyed gratitude to supporters for their patience during the transition and emphasized the station’s commitment to delivering diverse programming to an expanded audience.

The timing of the new antenna’s activation aligns with WTUL’s 54th annual fundraiser, the Rock-On Survival Marathon, which runs from April 1st to April 15th. The fundraiser celebrates the station’s history and growth, with dedicated listeners tuning in for eclectic music genres ranging from indie and punk to electronic, jazz, reggae, and more.
