New Orleans might be most associated with bourbon and rum, but local small-batch distillery Atelier Vie, located inside the Art Egg on Broad Street, introduced a new product, Euphrosine Gin #9, last November and has already brought home a gold medal for it from the inaugural craft spirits judging of the American Craft Distillers Association (ACDA) this March.
“Some of these competitions are only about marketing, where they hand out awards to maybe 85 percent of everyone who enters,” says founder Jedd Haas. “ACDA isn’t like that. It’s very competitive and they only allow craft distillers.”
Atelier Vie began production in New Orleans three years ago with Toulouse Red, a red absinthe distilled and colored with herbs.
“It made sense to us to also make a gin as it has a similar production process,” Haas explains. “Gin is like a cousin of absinthe.”
