Art Blakely and the Jazz Messengers, LIVE! At Slug’s, N.Y.C. (Everest)

If you think you know Blakey from his hard bop academy including the lineup with the Marsalis brothers, this recording will make your hair stand on end. Slug’s was the site of some of New York’s most adventurous 1960s jazz experiments, and this frenzied 1968 set was one of Blakey’s more intense moments, with newly arrived tenor sensation Billy Harper joining a front line with Julian Priester on trombone and Bill Hardman on trumpet.
