daKah Hip Hop Orchestra, Unfinished Symphony (Kufala)

One of the best fringe gigs of Jazz Fest ’05 was the TwiRoPa performance of this conceptually ambitious outfit, a big band and string orchestra driven by four percussionists, two DJs a funk rhythm section, ten MCs and a chorus of singers. The music flows through massed trombone rundowns like some giant brass band on the march, into rappers backed by eerie string passages and dub orchestral swells and past realms of Sun Ra and George Clinton as it spools out Maestro Double G’s unfinished symphony.
