Dora and the Zydeco Badboyz, Finger Snappin’ 2 Steppin’ (Zydeco Gumbo)

It’s not easy tackling something later in life as Texas-bred Dora Jenkins did a few years back when she took to zydeco. But compared to her yearling debut, one would hardly know it’s the same gal. Her accordion playing is much more together while her slightly sexy singing rings with self-assurance. Similarly, her Badboyz have evolved into a formidable unit, one that’s spearheaded by the whipping beats of Marcus Jackson who utilizes the smaller popcorn snare for a shorter, crisper snap. Steeped in the combustible Houston sound, the opening couple of R&B-seasoned songs are more modern and urban sounding than their Louisiana country-rooted cousins, exemplifying how the H-Town scene continues to expand the boundaries of zydeco. “Jamm That Thang” may be the album’s highlight with its attacking intensity and string-popping tightness. Surprisingly enough, crossover renditions of country staples “Cotton Eyed Joe” and Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” work well as pure dance fun, even when they perform the latter as a sans accordion lounge version. Hopefully, next time there will be a lyrical progression as well because lines such as “All the autographs I have to sign / it really blows my mind” are certainly not long-term keepers.
