Dr. Lonnie Smith, Too Damn Hot (Palmetto)

Organ king Dr. Lonnie Smith gets down with a second line groove on “Norleans” which opens this swinging album. The veteran’s mastery of the big B-3 shines throughout as he wonderfully teams with guitarists Peter Bernstein and Rodney Jones and drummer Greg Hutchinson or Fukushi Tanaka. One might expect Smith’s title cut, “Too Damn Hot,” to burn with rhythmic ferocity though actually the fire is generated by the organist’s amazing technique and soulful execution. Smith is at once old school and a musician with an ear to the future as displayed on another self-penned monster, “The Whip.” For a quieter moment, the leader wisely turns to the great composer/pianist Horace Silver for a gentle take on “Silver Serenade.” From the genteel, Smith and company jump into “Track 9,” the most “out” selection that puts a deserving spotlight on Hutchinson’s power and verve. It ends dramatically amid a traffic jam of rhythm and sound. The classic organ, guitar and drum combo that was the rage in the late 1960s and early 1970s benefits from updates and revamps applied by the savvy and always-swinging Lonnie Smith.
