Guyland Ledet and Zydeco Family and Friends, Be My Girlfriend (Shrimpo)

Who knows? Maybe Lil’ Guyland Leday will own it all before it’s all over. Already the 10-year-old accordion genius has accomplished more than most musicians several times his age by appearing on HBO’s The Music in Me, the Ellen DeGeneres show and an Oscar Mayer Wiener commercial. Accolades aside, these tracks recorded under the helm of former Zydeco Force bassist Robby “Mann” Robinson establish a relative baseline the little man will undoubtedly surpass on his next CD.

Though Leday is adept on both the diatonic and triple-row accordions, what’s mind-blowing is how well he fits in with the guys, not displaying any trepidation but playing confidentially as a peer. Credit Robinson for setting up a comfortable environment, even to the point of allowing Leday to improvise his lines, rather than be saddled with learning lyrics given his limited studio experience. Most of the time he echoes or embellishes the preceding line, but occasionally unknowingly adds a third harmony part (“I Want to Thank You”) on top of Robinson and guitarist Faron Broussard.

For the last track, “Just Playing,” Robinson wanted to see what Leday could create on the spot within the boundaries of old-time zydeco, often played with a pair of accordions and percussion. Create he did, practically staging a clinic, pinballing between octaves and switching melodies while juxtaposing squealy high notes and rumbly bass honkers that demand a coordinated use of hands. Eventually the track fades out, but one can’t help wonder how long Leday could have kept jamming had he so desired. This “kid” record doesn’t play the ‘cute’ card and is far more than a souvenir for grandma. Rather, this is a calling card of what’s in store next for zydeco.
