Hacienda Brothers, Arizona Motel (Proper)

Earlier this year, the Hacienda Brothers’ singer Chris Gaffney passed away after a bout with liver cancer. His voice and guitarist Dave Gonzales’ twang defined the Tucson-based band’s country soul. The pedal steel evoked wide open spaces and border towns, while Gaffney’s voice—produced by Dan Penn on almost half of these tracks—communicated the love, loss and yearning of the people who lived in those places. There are times when the Haciendas seem a little satisfied with having written more successful honky-tonk songs—ones fit the form—but everything on Arizona Motel at least meets that threshold, and a handful, including “Use to the Pain,” “Ordinary Fool” and “I Still Believe” are excellent. The debut Haciendas album is the most perfectly realized with the strongest songs, but Arizona Motel is solidly entertaining and a testament to Gaffney’s talent.
