Jason Frey & Al Berard, Old Style Cajun Music (Old Man Records)

Two of Cajun music’s most understated heavyweights find out that they’re long, lost soulmates when Al Berard (fiddle, guitar) teams up with Jason Frey (accordion, fiddle). Though Frey is often seen sawing on fiddle with many a Cajun aggregation, he plays his first love, the accordion here, creating an undeniable, bubbly presence with his flawless, peppy playing. Berard’s sweet, lyrical fiddle stylings are equally heartfelt, as he seems to channel the ghost of Dennis McGee. Frey and Berard prefer to let the music do the talking but occasionally they do sing: Berard in a tender, high voice and Frey in more worldly warblings. Berard and daughter Maegan (“Ossun 2-Step”) dub in a little rhythmic acoustic rhythm guitar, which makes this a standout duo record done by a pseudo trio. There are few twin fiddle cuts (“Quinze-Ans”) as well, but regardless if it’s an accordion-fiddle tandem or a fiddle-fiddle frolic, their connecting chemistry burrows deeper than you could ever imagine.
