Joyful, We’ve Got a River to Cross (Rampart Street Music)

The name of this veteran New Orleans gospel group, Joyful, also describes the way it delivers its musical and spiritual message: joyfully! This is a talent-packed ensemble that holds an abundance of special and diverse soloists who bring varying flavors—both contemporary and traditional—to the selections. That makes for some excellent programming that’s full of textural, melodic and rhythmic surprises.

Stepping out from the choir first is a dynamite male vocalist, who—like all the soloists—is unfortunately not identified. He offers a full-bodied, modern rendition of “You Are a Wonder,” with solid support from his fellow singers and a band that is with him all the way. The band—bass, drums, keyboards, guitar and saxophone—is another element that lifts all the well-arranged material on the disc to another, richer level.

The guitar takes off on the old-school “I Believe I Will Testify,” which speedily jumps and shouts in praise led by a strong female vocalist who seemingly effortlessly reaches for her upper register.

Superstar Lionel Richie’s “Jesus Is Love” gets good treatment by the moving soulfulness of the lead singer—augmented, again, by the band. The group is in the spotlight for the closing, primarily instrumental number, “Wade in the Water.” The familiar song stands as a fitting amen to a very musical and joyful album.
