Kevin Naquin & the Ossun Playboys, Kevin Naquin & the Ossun Playboys (Acadiana Records)

They all gotta start somewhere and, as the CD release of Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys’ debut indicates, it’s obvious that even then, the 16-year-old accordionist was destined for good things.

Besides Naquin, the Playboys’ inaugural line-up included another budding star, Courtney Granger, now of Balfa Toujours and one of Cajun music’s finest fiddlers/vocalists. Rounding out the ensemble was drummer Derek Maitre and his guitar-twangin’ pops, Hubert, who guided the teenage tandem until they were ready to spread their wings.

Though the mix could certainly be more dialed in, there’s nary a reason to remain seated here. The quartet plays with an unbridled exuberance usually found in only the most seasoned dancehall groups, reeling off splendid renditions of “Step It Fast,” “Creole Stomp” and “Grand Mamou” in the process.

The vocals are shared among the band with the tender-voiced Granger emoting the lion’s share. Regrettably, the original Dr. Barry Ancelet-written liner notes that detailed Naquin and Granger’s musical lineage (read: essential information) are omitted. The last two tracks are done sans accordion as Granger honors his sonic source of karma, great-uncle Dewey Balfa, with “Indians On A Stump” and “Balfa Waltz.”
