Money Mark, Brand New by Tommorrow (Brushfire)

Money Mark is best known for his stint as keyboard player for the Beastie Boys, and he has released three albums of groove-oriented funk. On first listen, Brand New by Tomorrow seems like a radical departure because it is far poppier than his previous work. With each successive listen, though, the continuity becomes clearer. His love of texture comes into focus, classic jazz-funk instruments like the Fender Rhodes electric piano or a Hammond B3 organ emerge from the mix, and the more pop-oriented hooks and changes simply sound like audience-friendly contexts for his grooves. The slow songs rely a little too much on his voice to work, but when the songs are exercises in mood cast in the pop mode, Brand New by Tomorrow is a good time.
