Ollabelle, Ollabelle (DMZ/Columbia)

Ollabelle (named in honor of country singer Ola Belle Reed) is an interesting sextet consisting of a front line of lead and harmony vocalists Glen Patcha, Amy Helm and Fiona McBain backed by a sparse and atmospheric blue-eyed gospel rock group that includes drummer (and Amy’s father) Levon Helm. Tapping into the newfound appreciation of traditional American roots music, Ollabelle give this material a contemporary sheen that is often interesting, effective, and enjoyable although sometimes it can get a little sappy and misguided. Clearly Amy Helm is the brightest element of this group with her piercing, soulful voice that manages a perfect balance between power and restraint. (She’s been described as a contemporary reincarnation of Julie Driscoll.) Her interpretation of “Soul Of A Man” is utterly haunting and captivating. The instrumentation ranges from National steel guitar to full fledged gospel rock replete with organs, tamborines, guitars, and drums. Ollabelle’s take on the Carter Family’s “The Storms Are On The Ocean” and the originals “Two Steps” and “I Don’t Want To Be That Man” are more appealing than all the usual Jesus songs.
