Pott Folse, Everything’s Going to Pott (Jin Records)

One of swamp pop’s brightest stars in recent years isn’t some conquering upstart holding the genre’s precious future in his hands but the soon-to-be octogenarian Pott Folse. True to form, his fourth disc follows the Pott-at-night variety show recipe with another commendable set of lovey-dovey standards (“Since I Met You Baby”), barstool weepers and Cajun French-sung originals (“Le Macro”) delivered by a well-preserved voice that’ll delight anyone toting a senior citizen discount card on Super Saver Tuesdays. Accompanying the Raceland rascal is a talented family band featuring honky-tonk plinkster Ron Folse, siblings vocalist Wendy Foret, guitar twangster Bobby and sax blaster Rick whose synth-centric arrangements strut with a dance orchestra flair. Yet, in the midst of all this comes an occasional novelty tune like “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” that’ll have blue hairs and cane-creaking baldys chuckling about the things that are all too true. The Kris Kristofferson “Help Me Make It Through The Night” parody, “Help Me Make It Through The Yard,” is the funniest as a crawling boozer discovers what time the early morning sprinklers actually go on. With everything working so swimmingly well here, it seems that everything was destined to go to Pott after all.
