Quintron, These Hands of Mine (Rhinestone/Skin Graft)

In which Mr. Quintron continues his transformation into the Jon Spencer of the Hammond model D. B-3s, Quintron would be quick to point out, are the most vanilla of electric organs, a flavor Quintron wants nothing to do with. Quintron instead sifts through the Junk Store of history in search of far more exotic creations.

This time out, Quintron shines the spotlight on his own invention, the Drum Buddy, which looks something like a coffee can on a console stereo but is in fact “a rotating oscillator/drum machine activated by rhythmic light exposure patterns.” While Quintron’s methodological approach hasn’t changed much since the solo organ hijinx of “The Amazing Spellcaster,” his work has with each release become more like what most people would describe as pop music.

Not to say he’ll ever turn up on MTV (I hope they take that as a challenge), but the Ninth Ward entertainer here sticks mostly with organ funk punctuated by cheerleader choruses, raps and roaring bursts from his Mouth Machine. ‘Meet Me at the Clubhouse,’ “Dungeon Master” and “Caveman 5000” are the funkiest, most sustainable grooves Quintron has committed to wax. There’s also some self indulgent jokes, some noisy bits and a few segments drag, but These Hands of Mine is the most complete Quintron yet to emerge on record.
